GILGIT DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (GDA)

Gilgit Development Authority (GDA) was established in the year 2013 under Development of Cities Act 2012. The mandate of the Authority is to ensure a sustainable development and to provide basic amenities to the inhabitants of Gilgit city.
The region of Gilgit-Baltistan remained one of the remotest and backward regions of Pakistan. During the last two decades the Federal government has invested handsome amount of development funds for socio-economic uplift of the region. Resultantly, there has been satisfactory development in various sectors of economy. During this period a mass migration of people from rural areas to major towns of the region has been witnessed in the quest of better facilities of life. This resulted in gigantic challenges for the development practitioners and other stakeholders.
In the view of the aforesaid scenario the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan envisioned improvement of major towns, based on the principles of modern urban town planning. It was stressed to establish autonomous development authorities in the major towns /cities of the region.
A development project, ‘Establishment of Gilgit Development Authority’ was conceived to supplement establishment of the authority at Gilgit city. The project was envisaged to establish a new organization which would work solely and independently for the planned development of the city.
